Upcoming in the Valley: Some handpicked events I’m excited about

Every day, I scour the local papers & college calendars for things that sound inspiring or fascinating to attend. Amherst is a huge college hub in Massachusetts, so winter break always slows down the number of cool things going on in the area. Be that as it may, I’ve been searching into the future to find some new & exciting events, thanks to the calendar @ fivecolleges.edu. Keep watching the New England Noir google calendar feed at right for extra updates!

  • Appropriating Art Into Dress exhibition at Smith College: “Curator Stella Schwartz ‘11 examines how patterns and motifs from certain early 20th-century European art movements filtered into everyday American dress by comparing three American dresses from the 1920s with artwork of the time.” (January 5 – January31). I can’t tell you how excited I am about this exhibition! I’m obsessed with the interwar period, and art nouveau is so inspiring. Who wants to come with?
  • Second Fridays @ Smith Art Museum: At 6:00 pm, “The Artist on Art.” Join artist Yong Soon Min in the lower level gallery for a discussion about her current installation at SCMA, Movement. At 6:00-7:30 pm, join us for a reception in the Atrium, catered by Sam’s Cafe. I can’t wait to see this exhibit; we’re so lucky to have museums like we do in the Valley! (Please note: this is an event scheduled for THIS FRIDAY, January 9th. Don’t miss it!)
  • Artist Lecture: Lauren Greenfield: Friday, March 6, 2009 @ the Weinstein Auditorium, Smith College. 5 pm to 7 pm.”Noted photographer Lauren Greenfield offers insights into her work for Thin, a documentary project on the subject of eating disorders, as well as her other photography and film projects. Photographs from Thin are on display at the Smith College Museum of Art.” Fascinating way to gain perspective on something I don’t understand very well. Hope I can get a ticket!

I’m not sure the policy on taking pictures at these events, so you should come & see for yourself. Do you have an event you’d like to tell us about? Email me at newenglandnoir (at) gmail (dot) com or leave a comment to let me know! Here’s to an inspirational 2009!
